The Brew Hut Customer of the Month, Judy Kuenker! Each month The Brew Hut selects a customer of the month. Learn more about our community of home brewers, their brewing experiences, and the systems they work with. Below is our interview with Judy.
How long have you been brewing? I’ve been brewing since February of 2011. I bought my husband a home brewing kit for his birthday in November and when he didn’t have the time to dive in I asked if I could “play” with it. I’ve been hooked ever since!
What is your favorite beer style to make? I love making all beers, I simply enjoy the brewing process, trying new ideas and creating recipes!
Are you a member of any brew clubs or organizations? Yes, I’m a member of Parker Hopaholics Homebrew Club as well as an AHA member. Our club is a great group of people who enjoy brewing and drinking beer! I have learned so much from my fellow brewers and have had some pretty great experiences because of it.
Have you won any medals or awards? Yes, but Ive only entered four or five competitions in my brewing “career.” I was lucky enough to win a silver and a bronze medal both for ciders that I make. I do love shopping at the Brew Hut and always seem to find what I need and often something I simply want! Thanks for this customer recognition to add to my accomplishments.
Describe your brewing system or equipment (Provide picture if possible) I brew using a basic cooler system, ten gallon mash tun with false bottom and a five gallon HLT. I have been using a brewing bag inside the mash tun for about a year and I’m totally sold on that idea! I have two nice kettles, an eight gallon and a sixteen gallon which I use depending on the size of the brew I’m doing.
What piece of equipment or brewing process has made the most difference in your beer? Like I said before, simply adding the bag to the mash tun might not make a big difference in the beer but it sure makes vorlauf and clean up easy. I’m always learning new techniques from club members and from reading the Brulosophy Exbeerriments to improve my process. I have been using a catalyst fermentor lately and I’m loving that as well!
List of any other hobbies or interests. My husband and I are empty nesters and semi-retired so our main hobbies are spending much time as we can with our five amazing children, our friends, and traveling! There is truly nothing better than to taste delicious beers from all around the world and it’s even better when we get to do it with one or all of our kids!
