The brewery was Aurora, Colorado’s first when owners Kevin DeLange and Michelle Reding opened with a 7 BBL brewhouse in a 900-square-foot space in 2005.
How long have you been homebrewing?
Stephen: 9 years. Deborah: 6 years.
What is your favorite beer style to make?
Stephen: Any Style that interests me but primarily German Lagers and historical beer styles. His signature style is Kentucky Common.
Deborah: Red wines. Her signature wine, however, is a white, Albarino.
Are you a member of any brew clubs or organizations?
Both Stephen and Deborah are members of the Aurora City Brew Club (AC/BC).
Have you won any medals or awards?
Stephen: Numerous awards including medals from the Colorado State Fair and the National Homebrew Competition (1st round). His highest award is a silver medal from the Great American Beer Festival (with Wade Malsen, then head brewer of Ironworks Brewing) for Kentucky Common in the professional Historical Beer category.
Deborah: A winemaker, Deborah has received several Colorado State Fair medals for her wines and is most proud of her Reserve Grand Champion award from the Adams County Fair for the second wine she made.
Describe your brewing system or equipment.
Stephen has cobbled together his two-vessel electric brewing system over the years.
Deborah started out borrowing Stephen’s equipment before finally getting her own stuff.
What piece of equipment or brewing process has made the most difference in your beer?
Moving inside and going electric has made the biggest difference in Stephen’s brewing, with having the ability to control temperatures a close second.
Deborah is most attached to her stir paddles powered by Stephen’s cordless drill for degassing wine.
What other fermented beverages have you made?
Stephen has done some ciders and has, with Jay Leisure, some distilled spirits from some of the beers that didn’t quite work out or got too old.
Deborah sticks to wine.
What other hobbies and interests do you have?
Stephen and Deborah love time in the mountains, skiing in the winter and hiking in summer. Both love to garden. Stephen writes and Deborah sews and quilts.
Is there anything else that you would like to share about yourself?
Stephen’s writing on seasoning beers with brewing salts has been published in BYO magazine. He is very active in the Brewer’s Friend forums, where he is know as Nosybear. In his real life, he is a quality expert for a Boeing subsidiary and a Taekwondo black belt.
Deborah is a retired teacher, has sung with the Colorado symphony’s “Too Hot to Handel” and loves spoiling her grandchildren.
